HOT RED ROAD SHOW
If you want to taste the best red wine in New Zealand, you have to book to the HOT RED ROAD SHOW.
Dates for New Zealand’s number one red wine exhibition, Hot Red Hawke’s Bay, have been announced with this year’s event taking place in Christchurch on 15 June, Wellington on 16 June and finishing in Auckland on 17 June.
The event has moved from its traditional July slot to make way for space in the busy calendar of Hawke’s Bay’s winemakers who will be travelling to Sydney and Melbourne with the red wine expo for the first time this year. The June timing will also allow winemakers to put the finishing touches on this year’s wines in the cellar before travelling away.
Tickets to the New Zealand dates are limited to just 200 per venue, and with the event a sell-out weeks in advance in some centre’s last year, red wine lovers are advised to book early.
“Last year, dozens of Wellingtonians were disappointed that the expo had sold out before they had booked their tickets, and we are expecting an early rush on bookings this year as a result – loyal fans of this unique wine event won’t want to miss out again this year” says event manager, Nicola Pentelow.
The expo gives visitors the chance to meet the winemakers from many of Hawke’s Bay’s award winning wineries and to chat to them about the stunning red wines that they are producing. It is a great opportunity for the public to get the intimate tasting experience that is normally reserved for those in hospitality and the wine retail trade.
Hot Red Hawke’s Bay is being held in Wellington at Wellington Town Hall on Wednesday June 16; and in Auckland at the Rendezvous Hotel on Thursday June 17.
General admission tickets are $38 inclusive of a special Hot Red Hawke’s Bay wine glass, free tastings of all wines, and full catalogue of all wines and wineries. They go on sale on 19 April through Ticketek. ...........................................................................................................................................

RED HOT ROAD SHOW
Wednesday 8th July
If your in the Wellington Region make sure you come to the Duxton Hotel. Come along and taste some of the Best Red Wines, not only in New Zealand but in the world. Gimblett Gravels reds have been tasted against 1er Cru Bordeaux, and showed them a thing or two. Thats right move over Bottle Shock, here comes the Bay.
The past five months has seen the international wine community discover the potential of the Gimblett Gravels district and its wines too, with two landmark tastings firmly establishing the district's status and reputation.
The purpose of the tastings was to benchmark the best of Gimblett Gravels against the best of Bordeaux. It was considered an imposing and ambitious undertaking of David and Goliath proportions, matching six of the very best Bordeaux reds (worth $7750) from their highly esteemed 2005 vintage against six of the best Gimblett Gravels reds of the same vintage (value $290).
The two tastings were split into a 'Southern hemisphere judgement' (held last October in Taupo, New Zealand) and a 'Northern hemisphere judgement' (held yesterday in London). The tastings were lead by highly respected wine luminaries James Halliday (in Taupo) and Janicis Robinson (in London) and attended by leading wine critics and Masters of Wine.
Whilst many expected a humbling result (and perhaps a lesson) for Gimbletts Gravels wines, the blind tasting results were nothing short of astounding. In Taupo, the Gimblett Gravels wines claimed 4 of 6 top placings and in London 2 of 6 top placings, on average receiving equal share of top placings with Bordeaux.
The result surprised all in attendance and spoke volumes about the outstanding quality of Gimblett Gravels wines. Many also commented on how remarkably similar the Bordeaux and Gimblett Gravels were in style and weren't easily separated.
The Gimblett Gravels association and its members were thrilled with the outcome, seeing it as a tremendous endorsement of their long-held belief in the area's huge potential. The blind tasting participants also noted that Gimblett Gravels vineyards are still relatively young in European terms and that even greater wines can be expected as vine age increases. James Halliday, renowned Australian wine commentator, described the Gimblett Gravels district as "not just a very special parcel, it is a sacred site".
So.... if you are in wellington, come along. Moana Park will be there showing off our Gimblett Reds.

BOUTIQUE HAWKE'S BAY WINERY LEADS THE PACK
Moana Park Winery Shows it has the goods to handle the recession
Boutique Hawke’s Bay winery Moana Park is showing that well priced wines can win accolades. With the results out from the latest cuisine magazine tasting (May) brings Moana Park’s recognition to an even higher level.
Moana Park has had another wine rated as best buy.
This brings the total to three best buys by Cuisine Magazine in the last year. Cuisine Magazine is a bi-monthly publication recently awarded for being the best food and wine magazine in the world. “Having 3 wines rated best buys by the world’s best food and wine mag. in separate publications is just amazing” said owner and winemaker Dan Barker.
This means that Cuisine Magazine rated Moana Park as having the best value products in New Zealand in 50% of their tastings. With 610 odd wineries in New Zealand we are extremely proud.
The Winemaking goal at Moana Park is to produce wines which show purity of fruit, are balanced and low allergen, they must also be great value for money, and do this within an environmentally sustainable program. Dan see’s the brand developing in these times to over deliver in value, to offer their customers fantastic wines at a reasonable price. The current winning wine is the Moana Park Grange Block Chardonnay, which joins the ranks of the Vineyard Selection Syrah 2007, which was also rated as best 2007 Syrah of the Cuisine tasting, together with the Vineyard Selection Viognier.
Moana Park Winery is a small wine producer which draws fruit from Vineyards in both the renowned Gimblett Gravels wine growing region and the cooler Dartmoor Valley. All Vineyards are grown under sustainable viticulture, and are one of only a handful of New Zealand producers where the winery is also accredited through sustainable practices. All wines are produced to be Low allergen. The wines are all certified through the Vegetarian Society, therefore there are no animal products (egg, milk, gelatin, fish) used in fining the wines and are bottled with the minimal use of preservative.

2008 Crush Update
2008 Crush has shown itself to be a little bit troublesome with a cold flowering giving way to low yields in the vineyard, this in turn was a godsend with a wet April which meant all the fruit came in early and in excellent quality, with the only issue being there isn't a lot of it. Harvest Hawke's Bay
Thats right HHB is here again, and we have some special things organised for you!!!!!
For both the Saturday and the Sunday come out to Moana Park chill out to the cool and chilled out tunes of Danial Munro, a local singer songwriter who has been likened to a young Bob Dylan with an indie-rock twist. This year Daniel is joined by New Zealand songwriter of the year Chanelle Davis.
Food this year is being carefully prepared by the experienced team from local restauraunt Caution Dining Lounge, with Executive Chef Simon Bold (NZ Beef & Lamb Ambaddador) at the helm of the BBQ, matching his food to our explosivle varietal wines.... you just can't go wrong. A little look at the menu give you the choice of Hawke's Bay lamb rack, eye fillet, organic chicken or marlborough Salmon.
There will be wine releases held throughout the weekend with the release of the following wines:
Vineyard Tribute 2007 Wild Ferment Chardonnay. A rich mouthfilling style of Chardonnay meant for food pairing
Vineyard Tribute 2006 Bridge Pa Syrah. The first release of Syrah off this block, a pretty special wine, to rival all the accolades we have already received for Syrah
Vineyard Tribute Dartmoor Valley Ice Wine. Tropical, exotic, loscious are only a couple of the descriptors used on describibg this wine.
Just remember, no matter the weather, we have you covered! The Marquee to avoid the rain or wind, and our massive 50 year old macadamia to sit in perfectly dappled light. You could of course just cruise down a row and have your own picnic.
Boutique Hawke’s Bay winery Moana Park is restructuring. From vintage 2006 onwards there will be a reduction in the volume of bottled wine production in the pursuit of high quality, more definitive and individual wine styles. The range of wines will be reduced with the focus on hand crafting small volumes of specific wine styles that pay homage to our sites in Gimblett Rd, Bridge Pa, Dartmoor Valley and Puketapu. The production of these wine styles will be evaluated on a vintage by vintage basis with no guarantee that a specific wine style will be made every vintage. The concept is to present the very best wines from each vintage to our customers, regardless of the wine style.
Whilst the winery is decreasing the volume of its branded product, actual winery volumes are increasing with contract processing for other New Zealand and Australian wineries keeping both staff and plant extremely busy. Moana Park already has significant contracts in place with some large and very well known New Zealand and Australian wineries. This has been the driving force behind the purchase of new equipment over the last twelve months. This expansion is only in its infancy with further development planned leading into the 2008 vintage. The winery is projecting to increase its contract production by in excess of 300% over the next 3 years. Moana Park sees its contract processing facility as a means of aligning itself with larger corporate winemakers and improving its own economy of scale whilst still preserving its boutique focus.
Moana Park Wines now Vegetarian Approved

We have just had all our wines approved by the Vegetarian Society of New Zealand......
What does that mean?
Simply, it means is that we don't use animal based fining agents in our wines! It is common practice to use these harsh animal products in the fining process while making wine. Leaving these products out of the wine means that our wines have superior mouth feel, texture and flavour. The animal products not only strip out the cloudy hazes but because they are so harsh they also strip the wine of flavour and colour.
This makes us only the second winery in New Zealand with this approval. We have been making wine this way since our first vintage in 2000.
Food Matching - Does this mean you can't eat meat with our wines? No, the traditional food matches with all our wines still apply. The vegetarian status in our winery comes from a position of us not wanting to add these components to our wine and having a regime of honest winemaking. It of course means we need to pay more attention to detail, but we are sure of the benefits in the finished product. This approach to wine making is very minimalist with less additives used, and a resultant superior product.
Common fining agents used in New Zealand are :
Isinglass - Sourced from the swim bladder of the Sturgen fish
Gelatin - Sourced from the hooves and tendons of cattle
Albumin - Egg white, and you can guarantee they aren't free range
Casein - A product sourced from animal milk.
Carbon - The burnt and ground bones of cattle.
At Moana Park we DO NOT use any of these products.
What do we use?...... We use one fining agent called Bentonite. It is a natural Aluminum Silicate which fines out possible hazes in the wine. We also cross flow filter our wines so we don't have to use bleached cardboard filter pads; by cross flowing we filter out any residual Bentonite as the filter pore size is 0.2 micron. And the real biggy...... is ......we use gravity..... yes if you wait, the heavier pigments will fall to the bottom of the tank, and the wine is left fined. Imagine that!
